Ekatarina Velika and History:
|
The
New Wave in Music (general intro) Music has always been an influental vehicle of shifts in cultural paradigms and, therefore, a slow, but certain force for a social change. The New Wave in Eastern Europe nurtured a generation that would bring about a New 'real life' Wave to their societies. Ekatarina Velika is one of the most substantive bands whose art turned The New Wave from an urban avant-garde into a primrary focal point of (what were to be) final golden days in postmodernistic (ex)Yugoslavian culture. |
The history of art will
remember '80s New Wave/Alternative artform as the last truly creative, daring and at the
same time aspiring music genre of this century. As all avant-gardes, it was somewhat rebellious against (musical) status quo of late '70s; however, the success of New Wave is based on embrancing of new, mainly individualist forms and ideas. The entire 1980s cultural attitude shift has a lot to do with it. This is especially true when we talk about the Eastern European experience of the New Wave music. While there are certain common characteristics to the entire movement, Eastern European scenes have some specific elements that clearly distinguish it from its New York City, Athens (Georgia, US), or even British counterparts. The generation that grew up with the sounds of those innovative bands in Eastern Europe indeed brought The (Big) New Wave to their societies and cultures. In fact, they were the ones who were the main carriers of change.
In Yugoslavia's, the 80s' New Wave / Alternative groups matured from innocent, imaginative and very much alive adolescence into one of the last longing voices of reason, peace, civility, and despair by the end of its age. |
