Introduction to Ekatarina Velika
(basic information)

Brief overview of the most important years in EKV's career. The text was originally published as the part of the group's portfolio by Sirmium Art Center, Sremska Mitrovica, Yugoslavia, in 1991.

In 1982 a new sound of unusual strength and emotional intensity was born in the underground music scene of Belgrade. Originating from clashing temperaments and mutual musical interests and orientations of its creators Milan, Margita and Bojan (together called "Ekatarina Velika") this sound spread baldly from small clubs throughout the land to become one of the most appraised musical values on the Yugoslav rock scene over the years.

The ladder of success for "Ekatarina Velika" began in 1984. In the same year their fiirst album was released, the group toured in Italy and they appeared in Goran Markovic’s movie "Taiwan Canasta". But it was only after the release of their second album with the hit single "Amber Colored Eyes" that their career actually established.

The third album gave five hit singles and extensive touring followed by massive popularity resulted in a live album. They also took a part in the new rock festival in Paris at the "La Locomotive" club.

In 1987 the band backed out sports halls playing to 4000 to 7000 fans on their promotional concerts. The same year marked the beginning of a long standing relationship with the australian producer Theodore Yanni.

In 1989 after the release of two aditional albums and after some 200 concerts with over 150,000 people the band was at the tp of its career. They have been voted the "band of the year" by pop rock magazine and they hosted the final evening of the "European Radio Diffusion Rock Festival."

The road of success continues in 1990. The band takes the part in MIDEM , Cannes, and participates in the first European Rock Biennale in Tolouse, France.
